Comensa (Coaches and Mentors of South africa) defines coaching as “a professional ,collaborative and outcomes-driven method of learning that seeks to develop an individual and raise self-awareness so that he or she might achieve specific goals and perform at a more effective level”.

Coaching is about creating change that helps to enhance performance and learning. Coaches emphasize new competencies, learning and goal  attainment. In fact, a coach is a personal navigator for the journey of life, focusing on what the clients want. Everything in coaching hinges on listening with the client’s agenda in mind.

Coaching has been shown to help leaders develop a clearer understanding of their roles and responsibilities. When leaders are more confident about what they need to do, they are better able to motivate employees and mobilize them for action.

The International Coaching Federation defines coaching as partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. Coaching is an interactive  process that helps individuals and organizations improve performance and achieve extraordinary results. Coaches  work with clients in all areas, including but certainly not limited to business , career, finances, health and relationships. Coaching results. The John Maxwell Company describes coaching as principally about facilitating change. Developing emotional intelligence and conscious awareness. In business, coaching is a leadership behavior that lies at the opposite end of the spectrum to command and control, and in effect addresses the whole person, not just ‘the role’ and business issues.

Coaching has many benefits, far too many to mention within this document. Each participant in the coaching alliance creates and holds the agenda, making every alliance uniquely designed to serve only the success of the participant. The process is diverse and expansive. It can cover a breadth of issues, such as dealing with the immediate obstacles that are preventing growth, personal communication and impact as well as building the vision and plan against a life’s dream and goal. In summary, coaching is about the marriage of a persons’ potential with performance. The context is to allow people to learn rather than teach them.

 Learn new approaches: Marshall Goldsmith, perhaps the best-known executive coach in the U.S., wrote a book called What Got You Here Won’t Get You There. It’s a wonderful title because the idea is so true. We all have a set of capabilities and responses that may serve us well as mid-level employees but that won’t help us as more senior leaders It is critical that we develop these skills to enhance overall performance and remain objective in our approach.

Achievement and alignment of personal and professional objectives: This is the bottom line for an effective coaching engagement. A good coach can help you get clearer about your goals and dreams, and about what you’re capable of doing to achieve them. He or she can also be a powerfully useful support system on your journey: someone who knows you very well and wants the
best for you — but is a neutral third party. Unlike an employer, your coach isn’t dependent on you for his or her success. He or she can be honest with you about how you’re doing, reminding you of what you’ve said you want to achieve and letting you know what you’re doing to impact that

Support in designing conversations for leading through influence

To be clear, a coach is not a psychologist, counsellor, or therapist. A good coach can assist those in need of behavioral adjustments when they want to change, but a coach is not going to provide psychotherapy at any level.

 

 A coach is also not a cheerleader. Yes – positive reinforcement and encouragement are essential to good coaching. But a coach is not going to wave the pom-poms and celebrate a “good try.” Instead, a good coach is going to say, “Hmm…how could you have done that better?” And then help you discover a path to improvement that drastically reduces the likelihood of making the same mistake repeatedly.

How Is It Structured?

The goals and objectives are just the baseline for structure. From there a coach will guide the leader in the development of specific action plans to achieve these goals and objectives. These plans will begin from a big picture approach and will then focus into the minutest details to define what needs to happen today, this week, and this month, to make the progress needed now to achieve the desired objective in six months, or a year.

 

One of the main goals of an executive coach is to develop leadership. Whether they are coaching an organizational team, or an individual executive, the coach’s goal is to promote the skills, capabilities, and performance of the client.

The truth is, using a coach is not for everyone. To benefit from coaching the leader must have a genuine, personal desire to improve and a teachable disposition that is open to constructive criticism. A coach won’t be able to help someone that has no desire to improve. If someone is unwilling to learn, then they can’t be taught. If a leader doesn’t have the confidence to tak  constructive criticism that is provided in a positive, instructional manner, then they won’t benefit  from what the coach has to offer.   The truth is, using a coach is not for everyone.

How Does It Work?

Coaching accelerates your progress by providing greater focus and awareness of choice.
Coaching concentrates on where you are now and what you are willing to do — and who you are willing to be — to get where you want to be in the future. A coach does just what an athletic coach or music teacher might do, only in a more complete and encompassing way.

 

  A coach challenges you and takes the time to find out what success in life means to you. A coach is your partner in living the life you know you can accomplish, personally and professionally. It can be difficult to reach our fullest potential alone. Athletes and performers understand this. They know they need someone else — a trained professional — to help set goals, discover real needs, and work effectively toward ultimate goals of excellence.

 

 So, they hire a coach or a teacher. No serious athlete or musician would expect to progress very far without one. Neither should leaders. And unlike business consultants who are hired to provide solutions, coaches believe the solutions lie within you. They may be hidden or stuck, but they’re in there! The coach’s job is to draw out, provide support, and enhance the skills, resources and creativity that are within you so that you can achieve your goals.

Do Coaches Work with Individuals or Organizations?

Either, or both. Often, the line between personal and business life blurs, and coaches are the only professionals trained to work with all aspects of your life.

How Long is a typical coaching arrangement?

Sometimes it is as brief as the time it takes to accomplish a specific goal or project over three to six months. But, more often in Leadership Coaching it is an ongoing relationship of at least six months to a year with team engagements lasting up to eighteen months. It
is not irregular to find the coaching relationship extending after that with new focus.

What Does It Cost?

Most coaches working with individuals charge R2500 to R5500 per month for a weekly 30 -45 min session. Executive coaches charge more. NB: Please note that a quote is supplied on a case by case basis, this is purely a guideline.

Do Coaches Have Credentials?

Coaching is a relatively new profession, but the best coaches recognize the need to be credential or certified within established codes of conduct.

Ethics and Standards

The following outlines the code of conduct applicable to all Coaches.

Your Coach will conduct themselves with dignity, honesty, integrity and responsibility

 

Participants are assured that anything they discuss with their Coach will remain confidential, unless required by law, or the participant gives permission in writing

Coaches will be clear about the boundary between coaching and other therapies, such as counselling (see previous information

Coaches will not recommend a specific therapist unless qualified to do so.

Coaches will not give misleading information about coaching and its benefits

Coaches will not coach minors (under 18) without parent’s written permission.

All coaching agreements are easy to understand, with expectations of both the coach and the participant clearly stated.

Coaches will be willing to recommend other coaches if it is more appropriate for the client.

Coaches have professional indemnity insurance in force.

Whenever possible, coaches are encouraged to raise the profile of coaching and correct any misconceptions about what coaching is and isn’t.

Coaches will treat all clients in a way that is respectful of people’s differences in relation to disability, gender, age, race, religion and sexual orientation.

Terms & Conditions of Business Coaching

  • Meetings will start at the scheduled time, even if the participant is delayed.

 

  • Cancellation of a session for any reason other than emergencies will result in the surrender of the session. Your development should be your priority.

 

  • You are encouraged to call or email your Coach between sessions if you are stuck, confused, challenged or just want to share your successes! Please respect your Coach’s time and be willing to keep interim calls to 5-10 minutes. Thank you.

 

  • Your coach will set your personal assignments to complete between sessions to help you in your growth.

 

  • The coaching relationship is for a minimum 12 sessions unless otherwise stated/agreed

 

  • This ensures your best chances of making major steps forward in your awareness and goals.

 

  •  Your confidentiality is vital, and your coach will never discuss or impart information about you to anyone else. Your coach is required to keep a record of the number of hours that they coach. Unless you request otherwise, your name will be entered on that log. This is only ever seen by the professional standards committee member checking your coach’s suitability for professional registration. Thank you in advance for your support of professional standards in coaching.

 

  • Your coach will never use information given by you during a coaching session for his or her own benefit.

 

  •  Your Coach is not qualified to give specific legal or financial advice. Please be aware that this is a coaching relationship, designed to support you in finding your own options and that any suggestions given are based on helping you to make your own decisions and should not be taken as authoritative or as advice. Whether the subject matter is business, financial, health, or any other, please always seek advice from relevant qualified professionals before taking action
